On the holy day of Yom Kippur, in 5737 (1976), the Lubavitcher Rebbe made a call to action. He requested that an organization be established in Kfar Chabad to assist new mothers in the early days after childbirth. Recognizing how special mothers are and just how important their role is, the Rebbe made a heartfelt plea that there be an organization specifically dedicated to supporting new mothers. Thus, “Shifrah and Puah” was born.
The choice of name was very intentional. Shifrah and Puah were two midwives in Egypt, who helped Jewish mothers during childbirth. Offering both physical and emotional support, they were the source of support in times of need. Following the Rebbe’s instruction, organizations bearing their names popped up around the globe, to follow in their footsteps.
In 5745, N'shei Chabad of Montreal established its own Shifrah and Puah. Its mission is to provide support to new mothers in their postpartum stage.
As the Rebbe said many times, “every child is a bracha”. Along with this bracha comes sleepless nights and the need for a lot of energy. Shifrah and Puah is an organization that involves the entire community, creating a feeling of belonging. It aims to provide support and care for new mothers, to help them during this special time.
Shifrah and Puah provides some of the food and all of the containers and packaging to our over 100 volunteers who prepare healthy breakfasts, fresh dinners, Shabbos meals and cakes for Sholom Zochors. These volunteers graciously and happily prepare delicious, nutritious meals which are delivered by dedicated drivers.
Warm smiles from the volunteers and the sensitivity to each mother are our specialty. We aim to provide mothers with a complete care package. In this vein, it’s time for us to expand our services. New projects on the horizon include offering services such as cleaning help and babysitting. These will be offered to each mother based on her individual needs.
Please partner with us so we can continue this crucial work of nurturing, empowering and uplifting mothers.
Our mothers are our future – help us help them!
